Liberation Ensemble, "Highlights of an Afro-American Culture,” is the
experience of an expression.
Liberation Ensemble was founded in l969, in New York City by Sangomuyiwa to produce a dramatic music and dance program that reflects a growing Black Awareness of African, West Indian, and Black American Heritages.
The Ensemble performances have included concert series in Bermuda, the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, art centers, correctional facilities, nightclubs, parks, universities, (from New York University to the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus) and various theaters throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Looking at the group, one can see African influence while also experiencing very modern and liberated movements. The Liberation in this Ensemble can be attributed to the director Russell Robertson II, A.K.A. Sangomuyiwa, who has synthesized his knowledge with his experiential learning's to provide a presentation of his group in a manner that is cultural, theatrical and relevant to the times.
